a-ha have announced the end of their musical career
Thursday, October 15th, 2009

  • A fantastic international career spanning almost 3 decades of making pop history.
  • 9 studio albums with sales in excess of 35 million - 70 million units including singles.
  • 15 top ten singles in the UK alone. Nominations, awards, and multiple world tours - including the legendary show at the Maracana Stadium, Rio de Janeiro in 1992, which earned a Guinness World Record for the largest-ever audience attendance at a paid concert - a whopping 196.000 people!

In the mid 80's, the Norwegian trio generated teenage hysteria and general pandemonium wherever they went. Since reforming in 1999 after a 7-year hiatus, the band has seen the focus shift away from the pop phenomenon they once were towards the musical legacy they leave behind - inspiring a whole generation of esteemed artists of today, from Coldplay and Keane, to Kanye West, Oasis, The Strokes, Robbie Williams, even U2.

In 2006 the band received a 'Q Inspiration Award' in honor of their lasting musical influence.

With the current album 'Foot of The Mountain' enjoying both commercial success and critical acclaim, A-ha has decided to call it a day.

As a consequence, A-ha will not be releasing any further albums in the future.

The band would like to thank their fans and everyone who has contributed to their amazing journey, and say:

"We've literally lived the ultimate boy's adventure tale, through a longer, more rewarding career than anyone could hope for.

Doing this now will give us a chance to get more involved in other meaningful aspects of life, be it humanitarian work, politics, or whatever else - and of course through new constellations in the field of art and music. We are retiring as a band, not as individuals.

Change is always difficult and It is easy to get set in one's ways. Now it is time to move on."

2010 marks the 25-year anniversary of A-ha's multi-platinum debut album 'Hunting High & Low' and the debut single 'Take On Me' which with the aid of a truly unforgettable video went on to become a number 1 in 27 countries worldwide, including USA.

The band will make a final world tour in 2010 to end their collaboration on a high note.

The last concert will take place in Oslo on December the 4th. See you there!

A-ha sang another new song on the South American tour of 2009 - "What there is". There were already two songs from the forthcoming album sang on the shows: "Shadowside" "Riding the crest".

As we can see, "Timbersound" (Magne Furuholmen solo project) songs are used in a-ha and band members works. Earlier there was "We'll never speak again" one sang by Morten Harket. And now theme from "Ottos Tema" used to be the main one for "Ti kniver i hjertet" movie became the musical basis for "What there is" by a-ha.

At the bands first Moscow gig Ilyas got the so called injury. Zemfira (a Russian rock-star), sitting nearby wasnt particularly happy about Zics loud singing and hit him on the head with a bottle. Fortunately the bottle was plastic.

In his "honorary thirty first year" Zic has changed traumatic stuntfull "new school" for freeriding. At the recent "Elbrus Open 2008" freeride contest held at Elbrus region (Northern Caucuses, Russia), he finished third and went to get his prize wearing A-ha t-shirt.

"There is such a profession as to love A-ha band", rivals joke on Zic. Well, the bronze is ours anyway.

We'll get "Letter from Egypt" in May
Wednesday, April 2nd, 2008

It is now confirmed that Morten's new solo album, "Letter from Egypt", will be released in Norway on May 19. There are some plans for a wider release but specific countries and dates are not yet finalized. According to an article in today's Dagbladet, a new single called 'Darkspace' will be released next week to radio. This song has been described as an uptempo, rock song.

In the article, Morten says that the album has been ready for a while but that he wanted to do some adjustments. By giving himself some distance from the songs, he was able to see possible improvements, which is the reason for the delay. Morten has used different studios in Europe, Norway and Iceland during the recording.

a-ha makes some noise!
Saturday, March 24th, 2007

Amnesty International is now launching the worldwide campaign "Make Some Noise" using the recording rights for John Lennon's solo catalogue. Big artists from all over the world - from U2 and R.E.M. via Christina Aguilera to Black Eyed Peas and Green Day - have made their own versions of John Lennons solo songs to benefit Amnesty. A-ha is among them!

""#9 Dream" (from "Walls & Bridges", 1974) is quite undeservedly one of the more underrated of John Lennons songs. It is always complicated to work on an already iconic song material, and we chose this one because we, rather immodestly, felt that we could add an a-ha dimension to this song," - the band writes in an e-mail interview with VG.

"#9 Dream" is also the same song that R.E.M. has recorded. That version is already available for sale. a-has version will probably be ready sometime in May, while a whole album called "Instant Karma: The Campaign To Save Darfur" - named after Amnestys main focus these days, Darfur - will be released on June 25th.

Brian Lane is no longer in collaboration with a-ha
Wednesday, May 10th, 2006

Brian Lane - a-ha's manager since 1998 - was the one who guided them to amazing comeback in 1999.

Now the band wishes to organize itself somewhat differently with help of their new manager - Harald Wiik.

"This is primarily a result of the fact that we have reorganized a-ha`s businesses. It was therefore natural to end the arrangement with Lane and his Bandana Management. This is just about finding an optimal model on which to run the business", - says Harald.

Wiik has been the daily manager of a-ha Network since December last year. He has also been manager for Paul Waaktaar-Savoy`s other project, the band Savoy, since 1999. Wiik will soon complete his education to be a lawyer.

The new universal a-ha!
Wednesday, March 9th, 2005

Morten, Magne and Paul have been recording a lot of new songs for the forthcoming album. All three of them are contributing to the songwriting, and they seem to have at least 20 - 30 songs to pick from so far. The development process has taken place in London, New York and Oslo.

The guys are spending time together in the studio for the first time in a while, trying out different ideas, adding and removing different instruments, to see what suits the specific song. Some songs that start out as ballads might end up as a rock 'n' roll number. "This sounds a bit like a U2 Christmas Carol," Magne says about one take. So they change it.

a-ha are yet in the process of deciding which producer(s) they will use, but Martin Terefe, who produced Magne's solo album Past Perfect Future Tense, has been involved in the recording sessions this far.

In comparision with the previous tour there were no additional back vocalists, but A-ha did well without them! Another difference was in arrangements. Magne Furuholmen - a glass extreme!
Friday, May 23rd, 2003

Magne FuruholmenMags has exhibitions in Copenhagen and in Oslo simultaneously. Both are exhibitions of his glass work; he has created huge jars and paintings in glass. The Norwegian paper Dagbladet interviewed Magne in Copenhagen about the exhibitions.
"This is extreme sport," Mags says to Dagbladet; he is talking about what a nerve-wracking experience it is to work with glass. "Glass is an extremely fragile material," he says. This is one of the things that attracted him to work with it. Mags primary interest was to find out how large you could make jars in glass. "This is the first time they have blown glass containers in this size," he tells Dagbladet. "Its on the edge of what is technically possible. When I work with a new material, Im curious on how far I can stretch the limits. Its a curse I have," he smiles.

Morten Harket: "It's like love..."
Thursday, May 22nd, 2003

He gave large interview to Frodde Nakkim from VG in late April. Here's some excerpts from that interview.
Morten Harket"A-Ha's potential is still bigger than we have had the opportunity to show. We missed on many things. There were big differences between our musical identities and the image we got... We didn't practice anything, we didn't try to definite who we were... After all we could observe that we only got interviews from teenage papers", Morten says.
"Today we need space to deal with our private and personal things. We all have families and we dont want to lose that for the band. We have other premises than we were twenty... We need to know that the band isnt something solid that always needs to be worked on. It's like love, it needs insecurity and weakness to gain strength."

Tuesday, April 1st, 2003

Magne Furuholmena-ha are in Germany now. They're making PR-campaign of their brand new live album. We've got some details of the band's new studio album plans. Magne Furuholmen gave the interview, and it'll be published in German press next week. "We've got great respect with "Lifelines"... Now it's time to do something new. We grew up to the music of the sixties and the seventies, and our plan is to let our fans know about it. Yes, yes, we're gonna make covers album", Magne said. "We're gettin' totally new experience... There will be "Easy living" by Uriah Heep as well as the songs by Queen, Doors, Beatles and others. There will also be a kinda surprise - we're gonna record self-cover and sing one of our early songs". Winter 2004 should be the release date, and band goes to the studio this June. For this moment a-ha have released only one cover-version of Everly Brothers' "Crying in the rain", but they did it perfectly!
"I must admit this site [] is doin' really well in creating nice April 1 jokes", Magne smiles in the end of the interview. :)
